Insight Of Sankardev’s Mysterious And Enchanting Childhood Life

New dawn of Assam’s revolution in spiritual aspect came by the birth of this enigmatic figure known as Mahapurusha Srimanta Shankardeva whose enthralling impact was not only felt in this state only but all over India as well as globally. Posed to be as the great saint and scholar who had left his remarkable impact in Assam history was born on Holy Thursday between the times of (Nov-Dec) months in 1449.


Traditionally as followed in Hindu calendar the birth of the great being who was believed to be a partial incarnation of Lord ‘Vishnu’ was stated to be on the auspicious time of Shukla Dashmi’ which is also marked as the great festive period of ‘Goddess Shakti’. Since Sankardev was a sole believer in ‘God’ who defied the practice of idol worship to make a reform in the Hindu culture of Assam by placing devotion to the laws of God as placed in ‘Bhagavad Gita’ the prime religious scripture of India, scripted by past Great Sage known as ‘Vyasa’, miraculously on his day of birth the idols of ‘Goddess Shakti’ fell down on its own.


It was in the pious region of Alipikhuri in Boruwa, Nagaon district of Assam where this noble soul took to birth in the Shivite family (believer of Shiva religion) of Hirumoni Khumbor Bhuyan and Satya Sandha. Father of Sankardev married twice as his first wife Satya was unable to conceive for a longtime and tied knot to Anudhriti. In a miraculous instance the inconceivable Satya gave birth to this great child known as Sankardev while Anudhriti later after her also delivered a son known as Bongayagiri. Sankardev was elder to Bongayagiri by one and half months.


Destiny had its own role and snatched Sankardev’s father after few days of his birth while his mother Satya expired due to severe illness few days after her husband’s demise. At this tender time Sankardev was left at the care of his grandmother Suryawati alias Kherhuti who was a widow. After a great hurdle his grandmother was able to educate his naughty grandson who later was able to place shining name of his scholar generation. Everyone in Sankardev's family were believed to be great scholars.


As a child Sankardev was hyperactive and energetic who was endowed with full of charisma to appeal everyone’s mind and heart. His grace, elegant smile and lustrous golden complexion captivated the attention of every passerby which was found to be uncommon in other children. During childhood Sankardev goofed around a lot without paying any priorities to studies till the age of twelve years.


Earlier in childhood Sankardev showed simply restless and prankish to all which annoyed his grandmother a lot about his future as he rarely showed inclination towards his studies. Sankardev was respected as the leader of his group as they were amzed by his extra caliber performance that nobody had ever displayed. Along with his group of boys Sankardev spent much of his time in the chant of lord’s name and sometimes use to make a procession as elders use to do during spiritual function.




The magnanimous presence of the enlighten Sankardev enchanted every guys in his community and use to earn respect for his exclusive courageous nature. He use to spend his time favorably in games and adventurous activities, Sankardev was prone to investigate areas that threatened others to dare. His favorite pastime is chasing wild animals of all types in the forest. Everyone in his group followed him as they knew he was the intelligent and courageous of all. At early age Sankardev was good at catching hold of the swiftest animals like deer and Bota birds. But his younger brother was timid and use to give away with tears at the slightest fright. Bongaaygiri his younger brother always used to remain amazed at the activities of his elder brother. The most favorite past time of Sankardev was in the mighty river of India known as the Brahmaputra which is considered to be the largest of all.



Grandmother of Sankardev did not appreciate his frivolous attitude though he had the potency to charm easily. She was rather opposed to his rebellious, frivolous manner of torturing animals, playful and teasing attitude that use to stir burst of anger towards him. Scorns of grandmother towards Sankardev made the boys of his group more attracted towards him more, eventually making him the most beloved of all. The group of boys loved Sankardev’s dynamic and clever attitude, considered much as an indispensable entertainer without whom the time didn’t seem to pass easily for them.
